Claude for Word: tracked changes and contract review.
The counterparty's redline lands at 6:40 pm. Forty-two pages, a hundred tracked changes, and somewhere in there — always — two edits that actually move money or risk, camouflaged among ninety-eight cosmetic ones. Your evening is now a needle hunt.
And the AI you'd like to throw at it gives you text in a chat bubble — which you'd have to paste back, re-format, and re-mark as changes by hand. Useless where it counts.
Claude for Word is the version that works where lawyers and operators actually live: inside the document, in native tracked changes. It's Anthropic's official add-in, generally available since May 7, 2026 as part of Claude for Microsoft 365.
Native tracked changes: the whole ballgame
When Claude edits your document, the edits arrive as real Word tracked changes — the same revision marks a human editor would leave. Which means:
- You review with the tools you already trust: accept, reject, next.
- Nothing is silently rewritten. Every proposal is visible, attributable, reversible.
- The document's styles, numbering and formatting survive. Claude edits selected passages preserving all three — no more pasting AI text and watching your heading numbers explode.
This is the line between "AI wrote me some text" and "AI is a colleague in my revision workflow."
The contract-review workflow
The feature built for that 6:40 pm redline: counterparty redline synthesis. Claude reads the marked-up contract and summarizes what the other side changed — flagging the revisions worth contesting, so you start from the two edits that matter instead of wading through a hundred.
Around it, the supporting cast:
- Document Q&A with clickable citations — ask "what did they change about liability?" and the answer links to the exact sections. Verify by click, not by faith.
- Comment-thread handling — Claude edits the anchored text and replies inside the thread, keeping the negotiation trail where it belongs.
- Template filling that inherits styles — your engagement letter or proposal template, populated, still looking like yours.
Standard caution stands: this accelerates legal review; it doesn't replace legal judgment. The tracked-changes format is exactly what keeps the human accountable.
Cross-app: the numbers walk in from Excel
Claude for Word is part of one conversation across Microsoft 365: it can read figures in Excel and write them into your Word document — or feed a PowerPoint deck — without copy-paste. The caveats: it works on open files only, it can't create, open or close files itself, and cross-app chat history doesn't persist between sessions.
Install and availability
- Word → Insert → Get Add-ins → search "Claude by Anthropic" (Word listing WA200010453; there's also a bundled Excel+PowerPoint+Word listing).
- Sign in with a paid Claude account — Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise, no surcharge. On Team/Enterprise an admin must enable it.
- Works on Word for the web, Windows and Mac. Not on 2016/2019 perpetual licenses or Android.
An Outlook add-in shipped the same day in public beta, if your redlines arrive by email.
Fine print worth knowing
- By default, inputs and outputs are auto-deleted within 30 days (with exceptions); custom retention policies are Enterprise-only. If you handle privileged documents, that's a conversation with your admin before adoption, not after.
- Documents from outside parties are a prompt-injection surface — a hostile file can carry hidden instructions. Treat unknown documents with the same suspicion you'd give their attachments.
FAQ
Can Claude edit a Word document with tracked changes?
Yes — natively. Edits appear as standard Word revision marks you accept or reject, with styles, numbering and formatting preserved.
Can AI summarize a counterparty's redline?
That's a headline feature: Claude synthesizes the counterparty's tracked changes and flags the revisions worth contesting, with clickable citations into the document.
Is there an official Claude add-in for Word?
Yes — "Claude by Anthropic" on AppSource (WA200010453), GA since May 7, 2026 as part of Claude for Microsoft 365. Distinct from Microsoft Copilot.
What does Claude for Word cost?
It's included with paid Claude plans (Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise) at no extra charge. There's no Free-plan access.
Will it mess up my document's formatting?
Preserving styles, numbering and formatting on edits is a core design point — changes land as tracked revisions inside your existing structure.
Is it safe for confidential contracts?
Inputs/outputs auto-delete within 30 days by default and custom retention is Enterprise-only — check that against your confidentiality obligations, and keep human legal review in the loop.
